Erenamaiko Obara’s journey to passing Upper Intermediate English reflects steady effort, thoughtful reflection, and a quiet determination to improve step by step.

What do you think it means to “learn a language”?

I think learning a language means expanding your worldview. Through interacting with different people and experiencing diverse cultures and ideas, you begin to see things from new perspectives.

It is not only about gaining knowledge of grammar or vocabulary, but also about understanding different ways of thinking. I feel that learning a language helps you grow both academically and personally.

What do you think is the most important thing in language learning?

I believe language is something you quickly forget if you stop using it, so consistency is the most important thing. Even small efforts, if continued regularly, lead to improvement. I try to expose myself to English as often as possible by reviewing vocabulary, checking my mistakes, and practicing speaking. I think steady repetition and reflection are more effective than trying to improve everything at once. If you continue step by step, your skills will definitely grow.

What does being able to use multiple languages mean to you?

Being able to use multiple languages means expanding your potential. As you learn more languages, you can connect with more people and access more information. This broadens your perspective and increases your future opportunities, including career options.

For me, multilingual ability also gives confidence because it allows me to adapt to different environments and communicate more independently.

What SALC events or sessions did you participate in? Did you find them beneficial?

I mainly used Language Advising (LA) sessions. I brought my writing assignments to review mistakes and unclear points with teachers so that I could deepen my understanding. For speaking, I practiced discussion-style test tasks with two classmates, following the same format as our speaking exams. This helped me become familiar with the structure and reduce anxiety.

I found these sessions very useful because the environment was supportive and allowed me to ask questions freely, which helped me build confidence step by step.

What are your future language learning goals?

I want to express my opinions more clearly in English without worrying too much about making mistakes. Sometimes I hesitate because I focus too much on accuracy, so I would like to build more confidence in discussions. I also plan to continue practicing both writing and speaking regularly. Even after completing my English course, I intend to keep using the SALC because I believe language learning is an ongoing process.

What is your message to everyone learning a language?

I would say it is important not to rush and not to try difficult things all at once. Start with simple actions you can do immediately, such as memorising vocabulary or reviewing corrections. Small, steady efforts make it easier to continue. Even if progress feels slow, consistent practice will lead to improvement. It is important to study at your own pace and find a comfortable environment where you can keep going.

「ことばを学ぶ」とは何をすることだと思いますか。

言語を学ぶことは、世界観を広げることだと考えます。様々な人々と交流し、多様な文化や考え方に触れることで、物事を新たな視点から見られるようになります。

文法や語彙の知識を得るだけでなく、異なる思考様式を理解することでもあります。言語学習は、学問的にも人間的にも成長を促すものだと感じています。

言語学習において最も重要なことは何だと思いますか？

言語は使わなければすぐに忘れてしまうものだと私は考えています。だからこそ継続が最も重要です。小さな努力でも、定期的に続ければ上達につながります。私は語彙の復習、間違いの確認、スピーキング練習など、できるだけ頻繁に英語に触れるよう心がけています。一度に全てを改善しようとするより、着実な反復と振り返りの方が効果的だと思います。一歩一歩続けていけば、必ずスキルは成長します。

複数の言語を使えるということは、あなたにとってどのような意味を持ちますか？

複数の言語を話せるということは、可能性を広げることです。より多くの言語を学ぶほど、より多くの人々と繋がり、より多くの情報にアクセスできます。これにより視野が広がり、キャリアの選択肢を含む将来の機会が増えます。私にとって多言語能力は、様々な環境に適応し、より自立してコミュニケーションが取れるため、自信にもつながっています。

SALCのイベントやセッションのうち、どのものに参加しましたか？それらから有益な点を得られましたか？

主に言語指導（LA）セッションを利用しました。課題文を持参し、教師と間違いや不明点を確認することで理解を深めました。スピーキングでは、試験形式と同じディスカッション形式の課題にクラスメート2人と取り組み、試験の構造に慣れ不安を軽減しました。

支援的な環境で自由に質問できるため、段階的に自信をつけられる非常に有益なセッションでした。

今後の語学学習の目標は何ですか？

英語で意見をもっと明確に伝えたい。間違いを気にしすぎずに。正確さにこだわりすぎて躊躇してしまうことがあるので、議論の中で自信を持てるようになりたい。また、ライティングとスピーキングの両方を定期的に練習し続けるつもりだ。英語コースを修了した後も、SALCを継続して利用するつもりだ。言語学習は継続的なプロセスだと信じているからだ。

言語を学んでいるすべての人へのメッセージは何ですか？

急がず、難しいことを一度にやろうとしないことが大切だと思います。すぐにできる簡単な行動、例えば単語を覚えたり、添削された箇所を見直したりすることから始めましょう。小さく着実な努力は継続しやすくします。進みが遅く感じても、継続的な練習が上達につながります。自分のペースで学び、続けられる快適な環境を見つけることが重要です。
