Shintaro Ninomiya entered the English Program at the Pre-Intermediate Level. He is an APM student who loves to travel and learning about innovations in business.

What do you think is the most important thing in language learning?

The most important thing is maintaining consistent effort and motivation. If you slack off, it can feel like all your previous effort disappears. That is why I try to finish what I start and continue until I achieve results.

At the same time, I have learned that taking breaks is important. Humans have limits. If you try to operate at 100% all the time, you will eventually burn out. I experienced this myself last year. Since then, I have realised that taking a day off is not laziness—it is a break. What matters is restarting your effort the next day.

What do you think it means to “learn a language”?

I believe learning a language means expanding your world.

Through my experience teaching Japanese to Vietnamese students in the SEND program, and through my own experience using English during my working holiday in Canada, I strongly felt how language broadens opportunities. Some of the students I taught later came to Japan on working holidays and built new lives here. That reminded me that language can become a gateway to new challenges and encounters.

Improving my English has also allowed me to participate more actively in group work and presentations in English-taught courses. Language has the power to expand your actions, your possibilities, and your confidence.

What does being able to use multiple languages mean to you?

It means having more options. Language removes restrictions on where you can live and work. In Canada, being able to use English allowed me to earn income, make friends, and live comfortably. If you can speak multiple languages, you can choose where to live and work more freely. If one country does not suit you, you can go to another. Language gives you that freedom.

What SALC events or sessions did you participate in? Did you find them beneficial?

I took Language Advising sessions. After returning from a working holiday in Canada, I did not want to forget my English and also wanted to improve my TOEIC score, so I attended regularly. I was able to book the same time every week, and the Language Advisor (LA) was very friendly and easy to talk to. As a result, I achieved my target TOEIC score, so I am very glad I took the sessions.

Why did you choose TOEIC, how did you prepare for it, and what are your goals moving forward?

I began studying English with the goal of improving my TOEIC score in order to strengthen my prospects of working for a Japanese company in Japan. Although I studied IELTS during my first and second years at university and gained overseas work experience in Canada, I realised that my long-term goal was to build my career in Japan. Since many Japanese companies place greater emphasis on TOEIC scores than on IELTS or TOEFL, I decided that achieving a high TOEIC score would be more advantageous for job hunting.

At the same time, I recognise that IELTS or TOEFL may be more suitable for those who wish to measure all four skills comprehensively or pursue study abroad opportunities. I believe students should choose a test that aligns with their future goals.

To reach my target, I focused on my weak areas and completed extensive practice questions. In the SALC, I followed a structured weekly study plan through regular Language Advising sessions. I see the SALC as a place dedicated to improving language skills and maintaining motivation. Through persistence and consistent effort, I successfully achieved my target TOEIC score.

Looking ahead, I want to gain greater confidence in English and become conversational in Korean.

What is your message to everyone learning a language?

I believe it is important to continue making efforts. If you have a goal and keep working hard, you will eventually be able to use that language. Utilise the resources available to you at APU and online. Visit the SALC, meet new people and expand your mindset. That is the best way to grow.

二宮慎太郎は英語プログラムの準中級レベル前段階から参加しました。旅行とビジネスの革新について学ぶことが大好きなAPM学生です。

言語学習において最も重要なことは何だと思いますか？

最も重要なのは、一貫した努力とモチベーションを維持することです。手を抜くと、これまでの努力が全て無駄になったように感じられます。だからこそ、始めたことは最後までやり遂げ、結果が出るまで続けるように心がけています。

同時に、休憩を取ることの重要性も学びました。人間には限界があります。常に100%で動こうとすると、いずれ燃え尽きてしまいます。私自身がそれを経験しました。それ以来、休むことは怠けではなく「休憩」だと気づきました。重要なのは、翌日また努力を再開することです。

「ことばを学ぶ」とは何をすることだと思いますか。

自分の世界を広げることだと思います。SENDプログラムでベトナムの学生に日本語を教えた経験や、自分自身が英語を使ってワーキングホリデーに挑戦した経験から、言語が新しい出会いや挑戦のきっかけになると強く感じました。私が教えた学生たちの中には、後にワーキングホリデーで日本に来て、ここで新たな生活を築いた人もいます。言語は行動や可能性を大きく広げてくれる力を持っていると思います。

複数の言語を使えるということは、あなたにとってどのような意味を持ちますか？

選択肢が広がることだと思います。英語ができたことで、カナダで働き、収入を得て、友達を作り、問題なく生活することができました。複数の言語が話せれば、その国で働き、生活することも可能になります。もし一つの国が合わなければ、別の国に行くこともできます。言語は自由に生きるための選択肢を広げてくれるものだと思います。

SALCのイベントやセッションのうち、どのものに参加しましたか？それらから有益な点を得られましたか？

語学相談セッションを受けました。カナダでのワーキングホリデーから帰国後、英語力を忘れたくなかったこととTOEICスコアを向上させたかったため、定期的に通いました。毎週同じ時間帯を予約でき、言語アドバイザー（LA）はとても親しみやすく話しやすい方でした。その結果、目標のTOEICスコアを達成できたので、セッションを受けて本当に良かったと思っています。

なぜTOEICを選んだのですか？どのように準備しましたか？そして今後の目標は何ですか？

私は日本の企業で働く可能性を高めるため、TOEICスコア向上を目標に英語の勉強を始めました。大学1、2年次にIELTSを学びカナダで海外勤務経験も積んだものの、長期的な目標は日本でのキャリア構築にあると気づきました。多くの日本企業はIELTSやTOEFLよりもTOEICスコアを重視するため、就職活動では高得点のTOEICが有利だと判断しました。

同時に、総合的な4技能評価や留学を目指す方にはIELTSやTOEFLが適していることも認識しています。学生は将来の目標に合った試験を選択すべきだと考えます。

目標達成に向け、弱点分野に集中し大量の練習問題を解きました。SALCでは定期的な言語相談を通じて体系的な週間学習計画を遂行。SALCは語学力向上とモチベーション維持に特化した場だと認識しています。粘り強い継続的努力により、目標TOEICスコアを達成しました。今後の展望として、英語への自信を深めるとともに韓国語での会話力を身につけたいと考えています。

言語を学んでいる皆さんへのメッセージは何ですか？

努力を続けることが大切だと考えます。目標を持ち、努力を続ければ、いずれその言語を話せるようになります。APUやオンラインで利用できるリソースを活用しましょう。SALCを訪れ、新しい人々と出会い、視野を広げてください。それが成長への最良の方法です。
