 音に恋して──花恵さんの「ことばで広がる世」

「この音、きれい。出せるようになりたい。」

花恵さんの言語学習は、いつもこの一瞬の直感から始まります。英語、中国語、韓国語—。

どれも「必要だから」ではなく、もっとシンプルで、もっと自由な動機でした。「音」そのものにワクワクしたから。現在はAPUで5セメスター目。複数の言語を美しい響きで操る姿から「海外経験が豊富なのでは？」と思われがちですが、日本で育ち、家庭で英語を使うこともなく、入学時点では海外渡航歴もゼロでした。すべてが、周りの環境をフル活用しながら、自分で育ててきた言語です。

英語は中高生の頃から話すための工夫を重ね、中国語は入学後に中国語1からグローバルラーニングまで履修し、実用的な力を身につけてきました。今ではどちらの言語にも、「不自由を減らしたい」という気持ちがあります。一方、韓国語は動機を思い出せないほど自然に始まり、「話せないとちょっと変な感じがする」という感覚に後押しされ、今もゆるく続けています。

 環境がなければ、機会をかき集め

多言語環境のAPUに出会う前、花恵さんはごく普通の日本の高校にいました。日常生活の中で英語を使用する場面は多くありませんでした。それでも、ALTの先生を廊下で呼び止め、月1の会話練習をお願いしました。「正直、実際会ってみると気まずい時間も多くて、無理やり質問をし続けて会話を保ちました。でも、英語に対するワクワクが不安を上回ったんですよね」。ほかにも、家から1時間もかけてドキドキしながら東京のEnglish Caféに通ったり、Hello Talkで見知らぬ相手と緊張しながら通話したり。「親には秘密でした（笑）。知らない大人と話しているとバレたら怒られると思って」。

「ある環境を活かしつつ、自分に必要な学びの場をつくっていく。」—これが彼女が編み出してきた学び方です。

学びのスタイルは、分析→行動→改善→継続

花恵さんは、できるようにしたいことが浮かぶと、「必要な力を分解（分析）し、できる行動に落とし込む」というスタイルで動きます。たとえば「もっとスラスラ話したい」と思ったら—

• その言語を話すときに使う口の筋肉を速い動きに慣らす(花恵：「個人的には言語によって疲れる口の筋肉が違う気がするんですが、どうなんでしょう？」)

• 使い慣れていない文法に外側から脳・口を慣らす

• 自然な音程（イントネーション）を知る

といった要素を見きわめ、TED Talk を同時コピーできるまでシャドーイングする*など、具体的なトレーニングにつなげます。そして、それを驚くほどの粘り強さで続けていきます。この積み重ねが彼女の多言語習得を支えています。一方で、「合わない」と感じたらその場でやり方を変える柔らかさも大切にしています。一つの方法を守り続けるのではなく、気づきに合わせて更新し続ける—その繰り返しの中で、彼女の学びはより自分に合った形へと磨かれていきます。

言語学習で一番大切なこと

花恵さんが言語学習でいちばん大切にしているのは、「やめないこと」です。新しい言語に惹かれるときは、いつも「この言語を話せる自分を見てみたい」という小さな憧れから始めます。資格や点数とは違う、長くてぼんやりとした道だからこそ、ストイックさよりゆるく続けることを大事にしてきました。

そして、もうひとつのスタンスが、「やりたくなければ、やらなくていい」という考え方。世の中には「英語は就活に有利だから頑張りたい」という声がありますが、この考え方に対しては、そっと距離をおくタイプです。彼女にとって大学での時間は、社会★生活前の準備期間であるより先に、★生の一部。だからこそ、就活のために何かをするより、「自分がワクワクすることを、疲れるまでやって、それでもまだ追いかけて、最後には誰かの役に立てるくらい極める」ほうが、ずっと本質的で豊かな時間だと感じています。

花恵さんの言語学習は、目標より「興味」が前に立ち、それを「続けること」が支える。そんな軽やかな姿勢が、彼女の多言語ライフの根っこにあります。

「ことばを学ぶ」とは？

花恵さんは、こう表現します。「自分が理解できる人のことばを増やすこと。曇りガラスを

少しずつ拭いて、外の景色が広く見えてくる、そして、外から見てもらえる私の範囲も広がるような感じです」。たとえば、右の図ように、バスのアナウンスが日本語や英語だけだった世界から、韓国語や中国語でも意味が取れる世界へ広がっていく—その「見える範囲が増えていく感じ」が、彼女にとっての「ことばを学ぶ」ことだそうです。

 次の挑戦

HSK6級*など、以前の自分なら挑戦を考えたことすらなかった級へも、いまの花恵さんは自然と手を伸ばしています。多言語MCにも興味があり、機会を見つけてチャレンジしたいと話します。

*HSK…世界共通で受けられている中国語レベルテスト。1級から6級になるにつれて難度が上がっていきます。

かつては遠くに見えていた世界が、いまは軽やかに歩き出せる「新たな景色」として広がっています。その変わっていく景色こそ、花恵さんが語学を通して切り拓いてきたものです。

FALLING IN LOVE WITH SOUNDS: HANAE'S JOURNEY OF GROWING HER WORLD THROUGH LANGUAGES

“What a beautiful sound! I want to make it myself.”

For Hanae, language learning always starts with this small spark. English, Chinese, Korean

— she did not start them because she had to, but because their sounds excited her. She is now in her fifth semester at APU. Many people imagine that she has rich experience abroad because she speaks several languages naturally. However, she grew up in Japan, never used English at home, and had never traveled outside the country before entering university. Every language she speaks is something she has grown by making full use of the environment around her.

She worked on English communication from junior high school, and after entering APU she studied Chinese from the beginner level to the highest level (Global Learning), gaining practical skills step by step. She now wishes to feel fewer limits in both languages. She started Korean so naturally that she no longer remembers the reason, and she continues it in a gentle, steady way because not speaking it feels a little strange to her.

CREATING CHANCES WHEN THERE IS NO LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Before Hanae met the multilingual world of APU, she studied at a typical high school in Japan, where there were almost no real chances to use English. She still stopped the ALT teacher in the hallway and asked for a short conversation session once a month. The meetings were often awkward, and she needed to keep asking questions to maintain the flow. Her interest in English, however, was stronger than her worry, and this feeling kept her moving forward. She also traveled for one hour to visit an English café in Tokyo, feeling both excited and nervous. She used HelloTalk to speak with people she had never met, even when the calls made her tense. She kept these experiences private because she thought her parents might worry if they knew she was talking with adults outside her usual world.

Hanae’s learning style is to make the best use of her environment and create the learning space she needs. This is the approach she has developed over time.

LEARNING STYLE - THINK IT. TRY IT. FIX IT. KEEP AT IT.

When Hanae wants to improve a skill, she starts by breaking it into smaller parts and choosing actions she can take. For example, when she wants to speak more smoothly, she focuses on:

• training her mouth to move faster for that language;

• becoming familiar with grammar she does not often use; and

• understanding natural intonation.

These points lead to clear practice, such as shadowing until she can follow a TED Talk at the same pace as the speaker*. She continues this work with strong persistence, and this steady effort supports her multilingual learning. Hanae also stays flexible. When a method does not fit, she changes her approach quickly. Through noticing, adjusting, and trying again, her way of learning slowly becomes more suited to her.

* Hanae: This way of using TED Talks works well when you can speak a little but cannot speak smoothly yet. Let us do our best together.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

For Hanae, the most important rule in language learning is to keep going. When she becomes interested in a new language, it begins with a small wish: “I want to see myself speaking this language one day.” The path is long and sometimes unclear, so she chooses a gentle pace instead of pushing herself too hard. She also follows another idea: “If I do not want to do it, I do not have to.” Many people study English for job hunting, but Hanae keeps some distance from this view. For her, university is not mainly a place to prepare for work, but a meaningful part of her life. This is why she follows what excites her and works on it with steady effort, hoping it will help someone in the future.

In Hanae’s learning, curiosity leads the way, and steady effort supports it. This light and gentle approach lies at the heart of her multilingual journey.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LEARN A LANGUAGE?

Hanae explains it like this: “It means increasing the words I can understand from others. It is like slowly cleaning a foggy window. The world becomes clearer and wider, and others can see more of me too.” For her, this happens in daily life. She moved from understanding only Japanese and English bus announcements to understanding Korean and Chinese as well, as shown on the right. This feeling of “seeing more than before” is what language learning means to her.

NEXT STEPS

Hanae says that she is now reaching for goals she never imagined before, such as HSK Level 6*. She also wants to try being a multilingual MC when she has the chance.

* HSK is an international Chinese language test. Level 1 is the easiest, and Level 6 is the most difficult.

A world that once felt distant is now a “new view” she can step into with confidence. This changing view is something she has opened for herself through language learning.
