Do you have a passion for writing? Is there a story idea inside waiting to be explored? After all the academic writing that comes with studying at APU, it can be hard to express yourself more creatively. Using your imagination to create a story can be a very useful way to practice your English writing skills. You can write about a topic or genre you are interested in, which makes it more likely for you to pick up that pen (or keyboard!)
So how do we write imaginatively? Sometimes, what can help us be more creative is by giving ourselves restrictions. It can be difficult to stare at that blank page with no topic in mind. Here’s a few ways you can try to flex those creative muscles. Write about a TV show or movie you enjoy You can use the characters to come up with a new story idea involving them. This is called fanfiction. It could be easier to write because the characters have already been created for you. You know what they like or dislike, and what world they live in. Be even more creative and put them into another world – for example write about Spiderman living in the Harry Potter universe. Use writing prompts If you search the internet for writing prompts there are many websites which could help you. These can be detailed prompts that give you an idea of character/location/action, or they could be more open such as “describe your favourite place.” Still stuck? Look around you, what can you see? Pick an object and write about that – this will help with your Benchmark Test too! Use specific targets I once took part in a writing competition where I was given specific targets to include. These were genre, location and object. It really helped me to write when I was given such narrow ideas. Would you like to try? Use this to write a short story (aim for 500-1000 words)…

あなたは書くことに情熱を持っていますか？自分の中にあるストーリーのアイデアが掘り起こされるのを待っているのでしょうか？APUではアカデミックな文章を書くことが多いので、もっとクリエイティブに自分を表現することは難しいかもしれません。想像力を働かせて物語を作ることは、英作文の練習にとても役立ちます。自分が興味のあるトピックやジャンルについて書くことで、ペン（またはキーボード！）を手に取る機会が増えるでしょう。 では、どうすれば想像力豊かに書けるのでしょうか？よりクリエイティブになるために役立つのは、自分に制限を与えることだったりします。何も考えずに白紙のページを見つめるのは難しいことです。ここでは、クリエイティブな筋肉を鍛えるための方法をいくつかご紹介します。 好きなテレビ番組や映画について書いてみよう 登場人物を使って、その人物にまつわる新しいストーリーを考えてみてはどうでしょうか。これはファンフィクションと呼ばれるものです。キャラクターがすでに出来上がっているので、書きやすいと思います。彼らの好きなもの、嫌いなもの、住んでいる世界もわかっているはずです。例えば、スパイダーマンがハリー・ポッターの世界に住んでいるというような、別の世界にキャラクターを登場させることもできます。 ライティング・プロンプト（指示）を使ってみよう インターネットで検索すると、文章を書くためのプロンプト（指示）が掲載されているサイトがたくさんあります。キャラクターや場所、アクションのアイデアを与えてくれる詳細なプロンプトもあれば、「あなたのお気に入りの場所を描写してください 」など、もっとざっくりとしたものもあります。まだ行き詰まっていますか？それであれば、あなたの周りを見渡してみて下さい。そして、目に入ったものについて書いてみて下さい。これは、ベンチマークテストの良い練習にもなります！ 具体的な設定から着想してみよう 私は以前、作文コンクールに参加したことがありますが、その際、参加者には書くべき設定が具体的に与えられました。それは、ジャンル、場所、対象についてでした。このように物語の設定を狭められると、書くのが本当に楽になりました。あなたもやってみませんか？例えば以下の設定を使って、短編小説を書いてみましょう（500～1000字を目安に）。
