Being Hired
I still remember the day when I received the email stating I had been selected as an English PA. I had applied to the SALC to experience speaking with Japanese students and to be able to help students improve their English skills. I was mostly excited to work in the actual location of the SALC, on campus, because it had a cozy atmosphere especially on winter days and a multicultural environment.
Working Online
However, due to COVID, my journey as a SALC PA started online in Spring 2020. I was in my home country, Bangladesh, so I worked from my house as a PA. At first, I was really worried about how everything would work out, given the online scenario. But the training sessions for PAs helped me get familiarized with the material and the position of PA. I enjoyed talking to new people and meeting new people through the SALC. My job as English PA also gave me a great opportunity to connect with other PAs and learn a lot from them as well.
Being an online PA has been fun because we get to help students learn English and interact with them, even though it is virtual. However, sometimes we do face some challenges. Since everything is online, we often face internet connection problems, which sometimes interrupts sessions. Sometimes, it is hard to fully explain everything online, but the good thing about online sessions is that we can use many different material like YouTube videos and other websites to explain ideas or words in English.
Next Semester
Next semester the SALC is still continuing online but will also introduce face to face sessions. I am glad I am able to be a part of such a welcoming and friendly community. I can proudly say I have made many Japanese friends in a short span of two semesters!
採用されて
英語PAに採用されたというメールを受け取った日のことは、今でも忘れられません。SALCに応募したのは、日本人学生との会話を経験し、学生の英語力向上に貢献したいと思ったからです。実際にSALCがあるキャンパスで働けることは、冬の日の居心地の良さと、多文化な環境が最大の魅力でした。
オンラインでの活動
しかし、COVIDのおかげで、SALCのPAとしての私の旅は2020年春にオンラインで始まりました。私は母国のバングラデシュにいたので、自宅でPAとして働いていました。最初は、オンラインでの活動ということで、うまくいくかどうかとても心配でした。しかし、PAのためのトレーニングセッションで、教材やPAの立場に慣れることができました。SALCを通じて、新しい人と話したり、新しい出会いがあったりして楽しかったです。また、英語のPAとしての仕事は、他のPAとつながり、彼らからも多くのことを学ぶことができました。
オンラインPAであることは、バーチャルではありますが、生徒の英語学習を手助けしたり、生徒と交流したりすることができるので楽しいです。しかし、時には困難に直面することもあります。 すべてがオンラインなので、インターネット接続の問題に直面することが多く、セッションが中断されることもあります。オンラインですべてを説明するのは難しいのですが、YouTubeのビデオや他のウェブサイトなど、さまざまな素材を使ってアイデアや単語を英語で説明できるのがオンラインセッションの良いところです。
次のセメスター
次の学期もSALCはオンラインを継続しますが、対面式のセッションも導入します。私は、このような歓迎されたフレンドリーなコミュニティの一員になれたことを嬉しく思います。2学期という短い期間に、たくさんの日本人の友人ができたことを誇りに思います。
