Sip and Paint at the SALC / SALCでの「Sip and Paint」

Adilah Zabia wandered into the SALC to join the Sip and Paint event she had seen advertised on Student Portal. A first-year APM student from Bangladesh, Adilah had never been to the SALC before and emailed the organisers to request a location pin. She was one of the 26 students who attended the Sip and Paint event on Thursday, April 30, during fifth period.

Adilah later shared, “I attended the event because I wanted to get back to painting and make new friends. I wanted to have fun, and I sure did. It was really amazing meeting new people and painting together.”

The Blue Room was set up with canvases of various sizes, watercolours, brushes, and a selection of beverages, creating an inviting atmosphere for an evening of painting and conversation.

The event aimed to create a relaxed environment where students could meet new people, have conversations, and express themselves through art. Although discussion topics such as life in Oita, studying at APU, hobbies, food, and art were prepared in advance, many conversations naturally moved toward personal experiences and shared interests.

At one table, students reflected on their first month of classes at APU and exchanged stories about adjusting to university life. Another group discussed past campus events, upcoming activities, and their first experiences visiting the SALC. The atmosphere throughout the evening was calm, welcoming, and conversational.

Linda Carrasco, a second-semester APM student from Honduras, shared:

“Painting has always been one of my hobbies, and when I found out SALC was hosting the Sip and Paint activity, I eagerly signed up! It was a truly fun experience in which I got to enjoy myself and meet other people in the process. I totally recommend trying out SALC events!”

Kai Taguchi, a first-year ST student, also reflected on the event:

“I attended the event because I enjoy drawing and wanted to connect with new people. It was my first time painting while socialising, and I found it very enjoyable. I met both familiar and new people, and I had a great time. I would love to join more SALC events.”

Beyond painting itself, the event highlighted the importance of creating spaces where students can slow down, interact naturally, and build connections outside the classroom. Through shared activities such as art, conversation becomes easier and students are able to engage with people they may not normally meet in their daily routines.

Sip and Paint is one of many SALC events designed to encourage interaction, community building, and cultural exchange among students.

アディラ・ザビアさんは、学生ポータルで広告を見かけた「Sip and Paint」イベントに参加するため、SALCを訪れました。バングラデシュ出身のAPMコース1年生であるアディラさんは、SALCに来たことがなかったため、主催者にメールで会場の場所を尋ねました。彼女は、4月30日（木）の第5時限に行われた「Sip and Paint」イベントに参加した26人の学生のうちの1人でした。

アディラは後に次のように語りました。「絵を描き始めたいと思ったのと、新しい友達が欲しかったのでこのイベントに参加しました。楽しみたいと思っていましたが、本当に楽しめました。新しく人と出会って一緒に絵を描くのは、本当に素晴らしい体験でした。」

SALCのブルー・ルームには、様々なサイズのキャンバスや水彩絵の具、筆、そして飲み物が用意され、絵を描きながら会話を楽しめる、心地よい雰囲気が作られていました。

このイベントは、学生たちが新しく人と出会い、会話を楽しみ、アートを通じて自己表現できるリラックスした環境を作ることを目的としていました。大分での生活、APUでの学び、趣味、食べ物、アートといった話題は事前に用意されていましたが、多くの会話は自然と個人的な体験や共通の興味へと広がっていきました。

あるテーブルでは、学生たちがAPUでの最初の1ヶ月を振り返り、大学生活への適応について語り合っていました。別のグループでは、過去のキャンパスイベントや今後の活動、そしてSALCを初めて訪れた感想について話し合っていました。その夜、会場全体は穏やかで温かく、和やかな会話に包まれていました。

ホンジュラス出身のAPMコース2学期生、リンダ・カラスコさんは次のように語りました：

「絵を描くことは昔から私の趣味の一つでした。SALCが『Sip and Paint』というイベントを開催すると知り、すぐに申し込んだんです！本当に楽しい体験で、楽しみながら他の人たちとも知り合うことができました。SALCのイベントはぜひ参加してみることをお勧めします！」

STコース1年生のカイ・タグチさんも、このイベントについて次のように振り返りました：

「絵を描くのが好きで、新しい人とのつながりを持てたらと思い、このイベントに参加しました。交流しながら絵を描くのは初めてでしたが、とても楽しかったです。顔見知りにも、新しい人にも出会えて、素晴らしい時間を過ごせました。これからもSALCのイベントにぜひ参加したいです。」

絵画そのものにとどまらず、このイベントを通して、学生たちがのんびりと過ごしながら自然に交流し、教室の外でもつながりを育んでいく場をつくることの大切さが改めて実感されました。アートなどの共同活動を通じて、会話が弾みやすくなり、参加者は普段の生活では出会うことのないような人々と交流できるようになります。

「Sip and Paint」は、学生間の交流、コミュニティ形成、そして文化交流を促進するために企画された、SALCの多くのイベントの一つです。
