Invitation to Africa-Asia Movie Show

There are some places to which I have never been and don't want to be taken: battlefield; minefield; radiation contaminated area; Agent Orange contaminated zone; disaster-affected area; prison; brothel; kidnapper's hide-out; illegal gambling club; cult compound; leprosy patients isolation facility; refugee camp; migrant detention center; sweatshop; garbage dump; slum and ghetto. Having said that, I know there are some people struggling there. Why not I am one of them? What if I was there? Those questions might be addressed, at least partially, by watching movies featuring the issues. They are fictions and reflect only a part of the reality. Still, it might be a way to get the point from outside. This is why I am showing movies which shed light to one of the darknesses. I wonder if you would like to join us.
This semester, three films will take us on a journey across different times and places. From contemporary Kenya to the Arabian Peninsula at the end of World War I, to Hiroshima some 80 years ago—why not see the world through the eyes of people who lived, and are living, in these places?
Each screening will begin with a brief introduction to the historical and cultural background of the film. After the screening, there will be time to put your thoughts and reflections into words. On your way home, the world may look just a little different.

「相手の立場になって考える」というのは、子どもの頃から求められますが、これは実はとても大変なことだ、と年寄りになってからも感じています。雨が降ったら住まいが水浸しになる、家族で麻薬の密売をする、ゲリラに強要されて親を殺す、難民キャンプで育つ、原爆から生き延びる、といったことを自分が経験していないのに「相手の立場」になれるのだろうか。なれません。無理です。しかし、どうやったら「相手の立場」に近づくことができるかを考えた時、映画を見る、というのが私が取っている手段です。そのために若い時からアジア・アフリカ映画を見てきました。一本の映画には、その背景の歴史や政治・社会的条件があることが多いので、それも確認した方が映画理解に役立ちます。そうやって、様々な人の立場に身を置く努力をしてみましょう。
今学期、3本の映画が、私たちを異なる時代と場所へ連れていってくれます。現代ケニア、第一次世界大戦末期のアラビア半島、そして約80年前の広島――それぞれの場所を生きる（生きた）人々の目を通して、世界を見てみませんか。
上映前には簡単な背景紹介があり、鑑賞後には、感じたことを言葉にする時間があります。映画を見おえた帰り道、世界が少し違って見えているかもしれません。
